"Bro, You gonna stay here for some more time", said Zaheer as I was typing my daily status which I had habit of filling weekly.
'E' letter in 'Automate..' hesitated to show up in monitor. So in my face as I turned back to see my lead 'Zaheer' standing with a mixed feeling.
Zaheer, who was enjoying his after marriage life more in office than home, is a very sincere guy when it comes to work. He postponed his honeymoon to first year anniversary and came to office just after the marriage beating 'Rab ne bana di jodi' Sharukh khan by a whisker.
"Why should we stay bro?", I asked with a hesitant smile on my face.
"We need to deliver this by today as the production is due in next week", he replied with a grumpy face.
I wanted to object him for the late stay. But the brotherhood I maintained with Zaheer stopped me from saying so. Zaheer would have felt the same with his senior too.
With a heavy heart, I questioned him again. "Only me?"
"No, Everyone of us"
This answer made me a bit happy. I even gave a soft laugh which seemed very silly. But what could be done when human feelings overtake.
Everyone in my team got irritated with the laugh which I thought none would have heard. They were about to say something to me. Might have been a curse too. At that time, each one of them got the same happiness which I got few minutes back as the most famous 6.30 guy rushed into the cubicle with an irritated face.
Naushad, a smart worker in the team who is hard to be seen in the office after 6.30. In the Weekends, he will vanish as if he doesn't exist in the world. Yet he completed his work on time giving no room to questions about his timings.
"Shit! I am on the way to my room. They called as if it is going to production by today. Can't they do this thing later? They can't plan anything properly but still wants to deliver the product well before time. It's not a deadline, but a deadly line", he busted out in anger.
Before anyone could react, he started his work. Zaheer went near him and uttered same dialogue in same tone which he said to me. He could have repeated to every other teammate as well.
"When will I get the build?", I queried Zaheer as he was passing my table.
"They are already done with the design and will start the coding in few minutes. You should get the build before 2 o' clock"
I was like 'Does he know it is only 7.30 now' and nodded my head without saying anything. He wasn't interested to see my reaction as he proceeded towards Vinay who was showing his frustration to the Enter button of the keyboard.
Vinay,a multitasker who works in various projects and always end up in a confusion about which project he wants to work.
He was almost kissing the monitor before Zaheer called him to assign the tasks for the night.
I went into my thoughts by scrolling through social media in an incognito window.
'Why should we work like this?'
'Are we working to live or living to work?'
'Are we working satisfactorily or falsing ourselves?'
'Are we doing anything useful to the society?'
Thoughts like these started to occupy me before I was disturbed by a word which came as an answer to these questions as well.
"Dinner"
"Loges, tell me the menu for dinner", asked Zaheer.
I told him to note usual dosa with a mandatory omelette on my name. Almost everyone ordered the same menu except Sivaraj who was busy in gaming.
"4 parottas and a chicken fried rice", he shouted when he was asked to tell.
Sivaraj,a workhorse of the team who will always be seen with a mobile in hand and a smile in face.
Everyone was amazed at his order but none spilled a word on that. As always, Moorthy came forward to troll him.
"Why buddy? Is that enough for you? You won't get anything until morning. Please order something more"
All laughed at the sametime.
Moorthy, a happy go-lucky guy who trolls almost everyone in the team and gets trolled by everyone at times.
I started to prepare my tummy for the dinner as it was already shouting to get something.
I was waiting for my dosa to be on my plate. But what came was an issue to be debugged.
I saw the time, it was 9.30.
'Loges, Complete it before the dinner comes', I told to myself.
I went to work on that issue. It seemed simple at first, but as the time passed I was losing my confidence.
The dinner came at 10.30. But Zaheer told me to have dinner after debugging the issue and he was waiting for me.
I wanted to refresh my mind. I got remembered of Popeye who got power by eating spinach to hit Bluto. I rushed into cafeteria to have a quick bite of snack. I got a glimpse of potato chips. I had few pieces of it. I didn't get any power instead I got a nasty burp. After all, I didn't have a Bluto to fight. Or I wasn't a Popeye. Both meant the same.
Somehow I wanted to debug the issue. Movies I saw worked for me at that time. I picked a cup of coffee from cafeteria and returned back to my place. I started to sip the coffee and debug the issue simultaneously thinking myself a 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini' Dhanush. In that movie, he finds out a deadly issue with few sips of coffee but what I could find was I didn't even know to mix an appropriate amount of sugar in my coffee. The coffee was worser than my code which at least work at times.
Out of sympathy, Zaheer who was feeling sleepy came towards me and said, 'Let it be and We will have dinner'
"No Bro, I will complete and then eat", I delivered formality statement controlling my happiness.
"Oh Boy! It's okay. It will not go anywhere. You can see it after the dinner"
I nodded my head and locked my computer before he could change his mind.
I followed him to pick my parcel. He said, "Dinner will become dry as time goes on" to convince me more. I saw the time. It was 12 already.
As we were going towards the TV room, I heard a moaning sound from the sofa. I went nearby to see who it was.
It was Giri.A pure devotee who always carries a good boy look in face yet the top commentator on 18+ jokes. Need to say, his devotion will make you fall in love with the god.
He was talking on phone. As I went near him, he lowered his voice and said "1 minute" in phone.
"Loges", he said with wicked smile.
"Bro, whom you are talking to at this time?"
"With my Bro"
"Did you have your dinner?"
"Yes, I had it with my Bro"
"How will you go in the morning?"
"My Bro will come and pick me up"
"Okay Bro, Carry on"
He continued his phone talk after nodding his head to the end of my question torture. The chemistry he worked out with his brother was an upbeat one compared to 'Vaanathai pola'.
We finished our dinner with the regular set of songs which were exhaustively being played on that TV. When I came back to my desk, it was 1.
Again, I got back to my business of debugging the issue. It should have been the late night dosa which inspired me to debug the issue. Food is always a driving force.
By the time I completed debugging, it was 2. It was a small Jerry which always challenged a big Tom. That day I became a Tom to suffer a lot to catch that Jerry issue. I was cursing myself for being too slow. At the sametime, I felt myself proud for finding out a most disturbing issue and played a mass bgm to myself.
Before I could enjoy the bgm completely, an eerie sound came from conference room which haunted me. It was like someone shouting in anger but I couldn't hear anything clearly. I slowly went near the conference room which was 200m away from my place and opened the door without making noise.
"Mongoooooooo.... mongo..Mongooooooooo", said Ajay's voice.
Ajay, a passionate worker who feels for the mistake made in previous project when he is working in a current project.
He was blabbering in sleep. He uttered few more words in british english which I could hardly understand. Some words took a direct dig at one who was assigning him tasks. I didn't want to disturb him. Atleast he could release his frustration in sleep.
As I came back to my place, my monitor was blinking because of the message I got. I started to read the message by blinking my eyes with same rhythm as the monitor.
It read. 'Logeswaran, Build Ready. Please Validate.'
As I was reading this message, someone patted on my shoulder. It was my General Manager who was none other than the sender of the message.
He asked, "Done ah?"
"Aiyo.. Anna!"
"What?"
"Testing is going on"
"Okay, Take your own time. But make sure that you finish up in 10 minutes as we need to run the feed in production server"
"Sure Bro!"
When I finished up complete testing, it was 10 in the morning after multiple builds and failures. He might have been pissed off with my mistakes. But I couldn't help. Sleep, my best friend turned out to be my biggest enemy on that day.
When we completed the feed setup in production server and started the feed, it was 12 noon. Almost everyone completed their tasks at the same time. At Last, We came out of the door together at 12.15 pm. Someone might have thought we were on a team outing trip.
Some random guy from the neighbour team shouted, "Half a day va? Enjoy".
