For almost all the trips that I went, I was more excited about the idea of travelling than the travel itself. I would not say they were bad or I was disappointed. Every trip had its own complaints like bad timing, over expectations or a terrible company. Even without any of those complaints, I was never able to feel the completeness that I was looking for. To put it straight, I was not sure about what I wanted. But I believed that I could crack this mystery of incompleteness at some point of time.

That was when I decided to go on the biggest trip of my life excluding my recent himalayan trek. It might not look as big as to justify my prior statement. But for someone like me who had hardly travelled across 2-3 states, it meant a lot both in terms of budget as well as the distance. It was always in my mind to get drenched in colors and look colorfully colorful. The month of Holi and my fellow people came together to make this happen in the name of a photography trip to Mathura and Vrindavan.

Being an amateurish photography learner, I was a bit hesitant to go on a trip that was all about photography with the people who are pro at what they do. My allergies with the technicalities of a photograph was always a threat when I am dealing with people who were good at it. But I was happy to be proved wrong as the trip went on and I was at my comfortable best.

The 3 hour drive from Delhi airport to Mathura had introduced me to the setup that I was going to live in for the next 3-4 days. Right from the butter dripping rotis in a motel to similarly sounding bhojpuri songs set, I got a taste of the difference I wanted that I never got in any travel before that.

The first day of holi started with disappointment as we were advised to go to a place called Gokul in Mathura. I was confused at the name when I heard it for the first time as it sounded like a person’s. Later I realised it was what is referred as Gokulam in tamil. When we reached Gokul, we could find the traces of color here and there but not holi. People were more interested in watching a shooting spot setup that was going on near a ghat. We felt like pleading at them to come and celebrate holi for the sake of us. At the sametime, we wanted to blame ourselves for taking too much time in preparing our gears with plastic covers and cello tapes. We felt over prepared and strange in a place where it seemed like holi had never arrived.

When we were in a shop savouring our disappointment with lassi, there was another blow in the form of a news channel which was telecasting an enthusiastic celebration of holi. We were told by the shopkeeper as that was in some place far away from where we were then. If we had to watch the celebration only on the news channel, we could have done that in our place itself. Before we could start proceeding with our whining, there came our hero with a packet of saffron color powder in hand. For the information, back then saffron color was not hated as much as today. He was already covered in multiple colors like the ones that set goals for a holi celebration. He told us to travel to Vrindavan which was around 15 kms away from Gokul to see what made him look so content with colors. He made us leave with a brotherly hug after smearing some colors which marked the beginning of our holi.

We arrived at Vrindavan after a bumpy 30 mins ride to get near the infamous Krishna temple. The flavour of holi started possessing us since the moment we stepped down. In today’s context, social distancing was truly a sin there. You were labelled to be fortunate if you are able to get a piece of land for your foot without any hindrances while walking. Stampede was always staring closely with the possibility. But the celebration was in such a way that you would not mind anything else.

Unlike any other festivities that we do in our home, the emotions were diverse and new. The people exhibited a wide range of feelings from innocence to fiery attack in their celebration. I would not say you will enjoy them all. There were some disturbances and compulsion to celebrate in a way that they wanted. Fortunately or unfortunately, we had tasted them all. Even for those, they have this phrase as a consolation ,“Bura naa mano holi hai”(Don’t feel offended, it’s holi). For which I got offended because I could not understand as it was told in hindi was altogether a different story.

In between my love for colors and the urge to shoot beautiful frames, I was lost somewhere. I was surprised by the warmth of people hugging me with ‘Bhai, Bhai’ emotions and smearing their favourite colors on me. I could not stop grinning at them, even the grumpy ones.

Amidst so much going around, there was this little cute girl celebrating holi in her own way standing besides a gully. The colors that she threw hardly covered any distance. But the innocence in her face made myself surrender voluntarily to her holi celebration. Her hands painted me with blue in a soft and lovable way. For me, that was the moment of the trip.

In the other world that was adjacent to the little girl’s street, a guy was enjoying himself by flashing his bum to the visitors and photographers. He was giving weird expressions to lure the audience before the actual ‘show’. Thankfully, my camera was not infected with that frame.

There was a mob attacking a guy for interfering their dance beats which was immediately resolved by some more color smearing.

We were experiencing all these by going along with the crowd until Krishna temple. In the premises of the Krishna temple, the celebration was overwhelmed with devotion. Even after the premises were closed, people were ecstatic while celebrating in front of the temple. To be honest, it took me a while to figure out which building was the temple.

That was when we got ambitious to get some low angle photos and reached the nearby shops to get our way to the terrace. We often don’t notice the business strategies of shops in our localities but talk about the corporate giants. We encountered a few gentlemen on that day who had read the demand accurately. We were told to pay Rs.1000 per person to get to the terrace. We tried to explain our passionate attempt of capturing the holi beautifully thereby asking for a discount. But we were stunned as he had proof of concepts to show with people paying the amount that was asked were more passionate than us.

After deciding not to pay the amount, we spent some time there capturing few insanely jovial personalities. In the middle of all these things, we never had the time to have lunch. So, we thought of having something to fill up our stomach before leaving for our accommodation. We came across a Bhaang milk shop which tempted us to experience another tradition of holi. There was some hesitation among the group as it was supposed to give us some high until one guy uttered the most encouraging words, “For 20 Rs, you will not be intoxicated much”. We had 1 glass of milk each and started to our place. To be fair, we never felt anything odd in our travel to accommodation and almost forgot that we had Bhaang.

It was a 25 mins ride. When we got down, I sensed a feel of giddiness and I thought to myself ‘It should be because of the hectic ride and irregular last night sleep’. On reaching the room, I felt like I had no place to crash even when the room was empty. So, I sat outside the room browsing through the pictures that I took that day. Soon after, I was accompanied by a couple of friends in the corridor. We were talking some random shit when the manager of the accommodation arrived. He came to us as we were sitting near the entry and started talking in hindi. All I could sense was some sounds coming out of his mouth. But I was grinning with a constant ‘haan ji’ quotient. This was the case with two other friends as well. Clearly, the manager was expecting some response but not the one we gave.

Another guy from our group came to the manager's rescue and replied something. After the manager left with a weird look, he explained to us that it was about the food as most of the shops were closed for the occasion. We had almost lost the food that the manager was trying to arrange. Then the guy told “Dei.. bhaang has started to work!”. That was the moment we realised that we were already high.

But the realisation didn’t hold too long. We started laughing at ourselves for the manager conversation. With what started off as a silly laughter, it increased exponentially and had grown out of our control. We kept repeating the incident to induce laughter. While my eyes were filled with tears of laughter, my appendix was suffering a pain of laughter. I was pleading others to stop laughing. But my plea would not have reached them as it was shadowed by my own laughter. When it felt like the laughter was settling down, we were already in another world where everything was moving slowly and multiple dimensions. Even a guy announced himself as Jesus in that world.

Throughout this stretch, we were hungry to the core only to be added up by much laughter. Luckily, we were blessed with a few packets of chicken biriyani by the manager. We were thanking the manager repeatedly while eating. Even the gratitude didn’t last longer. Once the food got over, we started cursing him saying “See, how less biriyani he had given”. We remembered these incidents in bits and pieces only after waking up from a good sleep. Our holi excursion continued the next as well except for the bhaang part.

For those two days, I was in a different world hearing the language that I never heard so much, laughing at everyone for nothing, enjoying colors like I have never seen one, feeling like I was in there for a while and much more. I guess the whole trip was under the effect of bhaang, it just gives me high whenever I think of it.

Trekking to Himalayas was the most obvious cliche that I badly wanted to be in. Whenever I travel to places, I sense this feel of incompleteness in the place from what I have assumed it to be. But I always thought my expectations are set high with the influence of materials in world wide web. So, after reading umpteen blogs about the Himalayan treks, I thought to give it a try by under promising myself. I had my own set of expectations and questions for the trek. At the same time, I was safe enough to choose an easy-moderate trek taking my fitness into consideration. Finally, I found myself in this beautiful trek called Mukta top with Indiahikes.

My pursuit to trek base camp through air and land ended exactly after one day in Kuflon. But what happened after that was pure magic. We started our trek through the trail filled with orange trees. They were bloomed enough to give us a warm mesmerizing welcome into the woods.

Trail through oranges

The beginning was all about excitement. The idea of having a trek pole in my hand made me think myself as a trained trekker who can trek as long as the trail goes on. But soon the reality hit me with the thirst. I started fighting my own challenges whenever sun kissed me. At times, I even thought that I wasn’t going to make it to the top and I should have spent this holiday in some sophisticated location without knowing what was about to come in the end. It happened with me in the first two days of my trek at few places as I was itching myself to get to the camp as soon as possible. After that, I never wanted the trail to end. With each step, I started rediscovering myself. All this time, I thought I was a photographer or at least a wannabe photographer. But I hardly took my camera out to capture in the trek. I think most of my fellow trek mates might not know that I had a camera in the bag. I knew I cannot capture the sound of the streams, silence of the shredded leaves, hardness of the rocks and softness of the breeze. Whenever I took a picture, it looked bland to me. That was when I realized that the nature has possessed me to the fullest.

The Magical path

When the days were showing off with such elegance, the nights brought their A game to the fore. We were safeguarded by mountains on all 6 days. Those mountains were good at multitasking. They never shied away from romancing with the stars in addition to the night watch that they were already doing. The result was something that could be witnessed only with the eyes which were blessed. I was fortunate that I had a pair. I slapped myself for thinking the star gazing was about counting stars all this while.

Star gazing at Shiladuni

The one fact about the trek that quite excited me from the word go was snow. I have never seen it in real and to trek on it was a sort of dream for me. As soon as I stepped on it and the perspectives of mine took a hit. I got to know the snow was over-romanticized in cinema just for the sake of heroine introduction scenes/songs. The trekking on snow was as challenging as it could get. It was slippery and deceiving when we neared the top. Every time I fell down in snow, it pumped up my veins to push myself to be on top of it. When we reached the summit, my senses shamelessly bowed down to the snow for being so beautiful. Mukta top was full of awesomeness.

Towards the top
The trek was planned and organized in a minimalistic way to cater the needs of whole trek group. The minimalism taught me a lot in regards to valuing simple things. From food to water, we had limitations in almost everything which reminded me the ignorance that we all have on those things while we are at home. Just because they are easily accessible to us, we are not giving them the respect they deserve. There is a famous dialogue in a Tamil movie that goes like this, “Always have hot water or hot tea, Burn your lips and get reminded of your loved ones”. The next time, that I am gonna burn my lips, I will definitely be reminiscing this trek for fighting out with a bunch for hot water to counter subzero conditions.

This trek was not just about nature and experiences. To me, they were just support mechanisms. The real heroes were people who made me introspect every cup of my thoughts.

When we were struggling even to walk on the trails to reach the camp and the summit, there was a team which was working relentlessly to give us the food and snacks on time. The kitchen team was not just doing the catering for the sake of duty. They always delivered varieties that we could hardly ask for even at home. On top of rotis and sabjis, there were always cherries like gulab jamuns, pakodas and custards. The ultimate surprise was the Christmas cake made of sooji and jaggery. We were wondering throughout the trek on how they pulled off this mystery. On the last day of trek, we had this introductory talk with kitchen team in which they apologized assumingly for any mishits in the cooking. We were shell-shocked as we were already in awe of their work. My heart suffered a knockout punch for bragging myself in the annual review meeting for the work which was not even half challenging as they do.

Kitchen Team

On top of the extremely cold weather, there was an awesomatic coolness that was wavering around us during the whole trek. I would let our technical trek leader Mr.Sunil Rawat (Fondly called as Sunil Bhai) take the credit for the same. Our days always started with his blissful alarm ‘Garama garam chai!’. He never liked to complicate anything and always had a simplistic approach to even challenging problems. In his talk on the final day, he started with apologizing for not being able to allow us more time in the summit. He never had the need to do it as that was done in the interest of us as a precaution for bad weather. But he did. He ended his talk with this exact dialogue, “What to say? You gave me lots of love and I gave you the same. That’s all. I didn’t do anything much”. How innocently and beautifully he has put it. In between the insecurities and the trust issues, I think we are losing the innocence that Sunil bhai has. It’s definitely the time to rethink.

Super Cool Sunil Bhai

The trek team was always high in spirits all because of our trek leader Mr.Pranav Dharamsey. His energy resonated with the whole team for all the 6 days which gave that extra push which everyone needed to complete the trek. Every time we circled up for warm up and cool down, he started with his trademark “Good Morning people” or “Good Evening people”. To execute such a near to perfect trek in such challenging conditions was a herculean task itself. He was fighting his own challenges as well. But that never showed up on his face. The passion that he had for the trekking was unmatchable. My respect for him went miles ahead when he started for another trek just after the completion of our trek with the same smile that we had seen him with on first day. He will keep winning hearts.

Ever Passionate Pranav

Last but not the least, the fellow trek mates who had their own set of lessons to feed me with. Every time I felt like I would not be able to complete the trek, they gave me the push to complete it. The passionate guy who has been a Pianist and has been giving out books for free, the girl with strong mental endurance who had fought her way through the mountains with knee pain, the motivated guy who kept pushing people towards the top with his songs and slogans, the hyperactive girl who kept the mood light throughout the trek and many more. I can go on to describe about everyone. But I fear my inferiority complex would grow higher than 11,838 ft. Everyone in the team gave me something to look back at myself which I was munching in my thoughts on my way back while descending.

The Team

I wanted to do this trek to get myself away from humans and get myself immersed in the nature. When I gave myself to nature, it lead me back to these beautiful humans. Oh man, Life is a deadlock!

I’ll be there for you, like I’ve been there before...
I’ll be there for you, Coz you’re there for me too...

Hopeless - This phrase would be apt to display my state of mind most of the times when I watched Dhoni bat. It took me longer than usual to realise that he was the reason to rescue the team from such a state frequently. There were times when I badly wanted to get out. I wasn't a big fan of cricketer Dhoni. But Of late, his aura made my insight to yell at me for being a dumbass. Eventually, I ended up loving him like anything.

None would have expected the birth of a legend when a debutant with hair running down his shoulders walked into the field to get out for a duck. After all, I didn't expect. But match after match, he started growing as a star for which I felt like blaming his luck. With the unorthodox batting style, I didn't see him to win consistently. He defeated me everytime as I wanted him to fail big. I was in utter shock when the captaincy was handed over to him. Because there wasn't even a clue that the Indian team had got its best captain in the history.

Even when India had won their world cup in 2011, I was really never interested to appreciate his captaincy and the crucial knock. I was still hoping his luck would disappear some day. I always thought he was showing off as if victories were normal to him whenever his calm face was reluctant to celebrate them. But he proved me wrong again.

My attraction for him began when he actually started failing. With the word 'fail', I mean his failure as a batsman when he struggled to score even the fewest of the runs. As a cricketer and person, he was winning the hearts all the time. Little bit I knew that my heart was already in queue. I was praying for him to get out so that someone will come to make the team win. But that someone never came. People wrote off Dhoni for every defeat of the team. His calm composure was never interested to pour out any reciprocation. My heart started to groan for him.

I slowly started to cheer for the runs he scored and to get disappointed whenever he got out. Only then, I had a keen notice on the miracles he did to the team behind and the stumps ahead. He never deliberately shown the difference he made. But it was evident both when he was on and off the field.

All of a sudden,
his inelegant batting style became the most elegant thing I could witness,
his press interviews became the most insightful thing I could hear,
his selflessness became the most sensible thing I could talk about,
his leadership became the most exciting thing I could cheer about and
he became the man on whom I can be proud about.

I would call Dhoni as a magician who had mastered the acts of Pledge, turn and Prestige. He would show us something to believe, then he would make it disappear questioning our own belief and again he would come up to show what he has promised. It applies both for his whole career and the matches he play. When people were expecting his retirement to happen, he started playing like Dhoni of the old days. But now with a difference that I am loving him. A recent commentary introduced him with an apt title "Dhoni - Reborn" when he played a glorious knock. I would second that.

May he reborn again and again to wow millions like me. He continues to inspire and deserves the love that is ever multiplying.
I would call it a force of nature that I got to watch two movies in two days which increased my intensity towards insight. These questions always popped up in my mind whenever I hear a incident or story based on historic base. 'What is the probability of those incidents being true?' , 'What if the man conveyed the incident to world was an ardent follower one party?', 'What if the whole thing was a hoax?' and many more.

These two movies tightened those thoughts with their depiction of Ramayana. One is Raman Raghav 2.0 and another is Kaala.

We have been told multiple aspects of being good Ram and bad Raavan. The grammar of being anything can be defined easily.  But we should understand the fact that they are defined by us or one among us. The two movies stand out by breaking those grammars.

Let us take the first movie, Raman Raghav 2.0, released in 2016. The whole point of movie is to shout out that there is equal amount of good and evil in everyone. For the will, they take analogy from Ramayana to show how similar Ram and Raavan are by depicting them with two characters. Interestingly, they both fall into same pool of thoughts. Though you would not see the direct metaphors in the movie, there are nuances which would help you in connecting the dots. Even you will find a character that talks with hanuman and praises Raavan for his heroics.

The second movie, Kaala that released very recently, goes multiple steps ahead by depicting Ram as villain and Raavan as hero. Unlike the previous movie, you will find multiple metaphors and symbols to give you a new syllabus of Ramayana. This movie breaks all those grammars and myths behind White & Black, Clean & Dirt and ofcourse Ram & Raavan too. There is a scene where the antagonist addresses the protagonist as Raavan to which an acquaintance asks 'Will Ram kill Raavan?'. And he cunningly answers 'That's what Vaalmiki had written right..!'

Here the man in question is neither Ram nor Raavan. It is Vaalmiki. I could easily relate this to present day scenario when I get to read different versions of same news in media.

I am glad that Ramayana is evolving and Cinema is evolving. We should evolve too so as to tender a end card to this judging game with what we hear.
